Focused reading intervention begins with French Immersion Senior Kindergarten Classes

Excerpt from Principal's report April 2014 General Lake Public School ................"One exciting development around our School Improvement Plan involves a focused intervention in Language and Math with our English classes. On March 24th students in Mr Blimkie's jk/sk class and Mrs Slepica Stewarts sk/1 class, were grouped into three classes to help support individual needs and provide a focused intervention. With the help of SERT teacher Mrs Conway and educational assistants Mrs Van Hoof, Mrs Charbonneau, Mrs Murphy and Mrs Moreau, the students are involved in various activities to meet their needs. Our other SERT teacher, Mrs Calver, has begun implementing a similar strategy involving an intervention with our Core English teacher, Ms Bennett, in the French Immersion kindergarten group. We look forward to celebrating their successes in the next 6 weeks".

Introducing Focused Intervention

Dear Parents & Guardians, The Early Learning and Primary teacher team in the English division at General Lake are excited for some upcoming initiatives in our JK/SK and SK/1 classes. Due to increased student enrollment, we are happy to announce additional support and opportunities which include smaller group numbers by 35% with focused intervention in the areas of language and math. Initiated by Superintendent McCann-Kyte and Principal Deb Legault, teachers Mrs. Slepica-Stewart, Mr. Mitch Blimkie and Mrs. Lisa Conway in collaboration with Ms. Steph Calver, the Special Education Resource Teacher, will be developing and implementing differentiated language and math programs for your child to meet their individual programming needs. The new program begins Monday, March 24th. Please note your child’s homeroom teacher will not change although for the language and math instructional component of the day your child will be with __________________________. The students will continue all other subjects with their homeroom teacher. We are looking forward to this exciting prospect for our students as we implement this new and innovative teaching model that promotes focused intervention and increased learning opportunities in a small group setting. As a welcoming group activity all students and teachers will join Mrs. Slepica-Stewart’s class with their Out of Hibernation Celebration this Friday, March 21. Students should wear their pajamas and bring their favourite teddy bear. Pancakes will be provided! Students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with all team members and the three classrooms at the end of the hall where their language and math groups will be conducted. Do not hesitate to contact any of the team members if you have any questions or concerns, Sincerely, Deb Legault, Principal Nancy Slepica-Stewart, Mitch Blimkie, Lisa Conway, Classroom Teachers Steph Calver, Special Education Resource Teacher

If the Walls could talk.....

During a walkthrough in December looking at the walls for evidence of learning related to Math.

March 6 Professional Development: Exploring artifacts

Artifacts: Please discuss with your partner your artifact/evidence Please bring along an artifact that has provided evidence of something that you have learned in regards to mathematics since the beginning of the school year. For example, it might be a picture of a group of students, some notes that you recorded during a PD opportunity, an article that supported co-learning, a note from a student, a student conversation...the possibilities are endless (think: Triangulation of evidence - Conversation, Observation, Product). Please ensure that this artifact is something that you are comfortable talking about to others. The following questions will guide your conversation about the artifact with your peers: • Describe the artifact. • What does this artifact provide evidence of? • In what ways does the artifact provide evidence about how you teach? • In what ways does the artifact provide evidence about how you learn? In what ways does the artifact connect to your Classroom Goal Triangulation Tool: Think about how the artifact fits into the triangulation tool (conversations, observations, product)
